Gamma Camera

The gamma camera is an imaging technique used to carry out functional scans of the brain, thyroid, lungs, liver, gall bladder, kidneys and skeleton. Gamma camera images the radiation from a tracer or isotope introduced into the patient's body. It is also called scintillation camera and the technique is known as scintigraphy.
A radiopharmaceutical is administered to the patient and it accumulates in the organ of interest. The scintillation is selected by an array of photo multiplier tubes which generate a voltage pulse which ultimately via a complicated pathway leads to formation of an image.
